A lot of these is wishful thinking at least for the longest time. Now, Google has come out in the open and said that if you get a lot of Google Plus votes, your rankings may improve.  

I bring this up because it’s too easy to blow a lot of money on social media signals and have very little to show for it. You have to understand how social media signals correlate with improvements in your search engine rankings. It’s not as direct as you think. It’s not a simple matter of placing a link on Facebook and then waking up to see that your rankings on Google has improved.  

Instead, it works in an indirect way. The more popular your content is, the more likely it would be found in social media platforms.
